(C. J. SHAH MARKET, LALBAUG )
REVIVING CULTU RAL MARKETPLACE IN SOUTH MUMBAI, INDIA‘Reviving Cultural Marketplace in South Mumbai' is my final year architectural thesis. A thorough analysis of the evolution of urban spaces from Ancient Greece to Modern Markets, classification of marketplaces, the relationship between the marketplace and an urban space, comparative analysis of thirty five municipal markets in the city of South Mumbai and then finally demonstrating a design prototype of the Municipal market in Lalbaug on a neighborhood scale addressing the issues in today’s context and needs of the city. An effort was made to exemplify through redesign proposal that how C. J. Shah Market which was obsolete in nature can become flexible and absorptive when an eleven days city level ‘Ganesh’ festival is celebrated around the marketplace.
